“I stayed at their flat in Downtown LA my last two nights and I had an incredible local experience. It is always more interesting to meet new people and stay with locals, specially if you have friends in common with them. Friend Theory not only saved my trip, it also turned it into a way more awesome experience and helped me make new friends.”
How to find free accommodation in Los Angeles? Our friend Hazam explains you how he found it through Friend Theory
Los Angeles had been in my bucket list for way too long.
But I didn’t know anyone in LA, and since I never travel to a place where I don’t have friends I can stay and hang out with, I was just waiting for the right opportunity. And so the opportunity arose, when my good friend David and his wife Zarah where going to move there We were sitting in a coffee shop in Cape Town when he told me about this. “You should come visit us in LA, bro” he said, and his invitation sounded very appealing. I got excited and immediately said I’d come visit.
So I booked my ticket but when time came for me to fly there, David told me they might be away as they had to go to Spain, so I would have to find accommodation elsewhere…. I had a very low budget for my trip as accommodation in LA is ridiculously expensive, and I didn’t know anyone else in the city… Anyway, I just thought to myself “I’l figure something out”.
I asked all my friends whom I thought might have friends in LA if they could host me for two nights. I was fully relying on friends of friends. Days went by and I couldn’t find anything so I racked my brains trying to find a place to stay.
I went through all my contacts, tried making use of all my social media profiles and all online platforms that could help, and then I remembered seeing somewhere an online platform called Friend Theory, that allowed you to stay with friends of friends for free all over the world!
I immediately signed up and started searching. I found two friends of friends in LA. I contacted the first one –he was traveling on the next day. I contacted the second one, a girl called Ly –she said she would have to confirm with her roommates. I waited until the next day, fingers crossed. She replied. It was a yes!
I stayed at their flat in Downtown LA my last two nights and I had an incredible local experience. It is always more interesting to meet new people and stay with locals, specially if you have friends in common with them. Ly and her roommates had time to spend with me and to show me around and I actually got to hang out with them for two days. I had my best time in LA on those two days. Friend Theory not only saved my trip, it also turned it into a way more awesome experience and helped me make new friends.
Although two days weren’t really enough, which means I now a have a reason to go back to Los Angeles 😉
